Is Gardening Making a Comeback?

Gardening has been a major source of food for ages; however due to the increased population of humans and the expansion of cities into farmlands, many of the farm lands in the United States has greatly decreased. Much of the products consumers purchase at the grocery store are grown in other countries and have to be imported into the country, traveling extensive distances. Upon moving to a community with more land space I have noticed people at the local home improvement stores gathering materials for gardening at their home. Soon I became curious about the process of gardening and about the product that I could create as well as with the turn out.
After purchasing a new home I recently I decided to take up vegetable gardening. I have always been interested in gardening, maybe it is the small town Indiana upbringing, however I never had the opportunity to start my own garden as I grew older. Through conversations, classes offered at the local extension office and frequent visits to gardening stores I have also noticed other individuals in my area with similar interests. Gardening in the form of fruits, vegetables and flowers can have many added benefits.

There are two important options to consider when starting a vegetable garden, whether to start from seeds or from plants. Both of the options can have positive and negative aspects. Some things to consider when choosing to use seeds are that seeds require more time, more patience, are less expensive and offer a science experiment for young children to witness and take part in. Purchasing starter plants can be more expensive, require less time and patience, and can produce a faster product. I decided to start my garden using seeds because this is my first experience starting my own garden. I used many different types of seeds and quickly learned that some require more attention than others. Planting a garden from seeds or plants can produce positive results; however it is an individual preference.

Another one of the first and most important steps in gardening is choosing a location of the
garden. Of course individuals cannot change the location of their home to make it more suitable for a lush garden; however there a few simple adjustments to make a desirable location for produce to grow. One negative aspect that I quickly learned about starting a garden in Missouri is the lack of suitable soil. I discovered that the soil we have in our back yard is very sparse and under that thin layer of soil was a blend of clay and rocks. This combination led me to try out an above ground garden. My husband went to the local home improvement store and bought untreated wood measuring 6×12 feet. Using an electric drill my husband attached braches on the four corners of the garden box to ensure the security. After assembling the box we then lined the bottom with a black mesh lining to prevent unwanted growth of weeds and grass in the garden. Another method that also works and is less expensive is lining the bottom newspaper instead of the black mesh lining. We then filled the box with a mixture of top soil, sand, pet moss, and potting soil and used tools to ensure an even distribution of the naturally occurring materials. This added combination seemed to create a pleasant environment for plant life, as many plants grew plentiful immediately.

Importance of Garden Decor

The Quest for Significance

People are looking for ways to add significance, peace of mind, a quality experience, and an escape from the “rat-race” in their lives. Stated differently, people want to add depth and meaning to their lives. One way to accomplish this, it is asserted, is to make or purchase decor for your garden.

Make Your Garden Unique

Garden decor, along with things related to gardens, provides a return to nature, a sense of spirituality, and a return to the earth as people journey on their quest for significance and ultimate meaning. Moreover, through the use of decorations, gardeners reveal their quirks and shortcomings, their wit, their creativity, and their desire to make their gardens unique.

Transform Your Life

Gardens and their ornaments are symbols of enchantment, of mystery, of meaning, and of ultimate being. Another way of looking at this is to see that gardens and garden accents provide the power to transform one’s mood and one’s life. To be sure, garden accessories can become symbolic reminders of life’s blessings as they encourage people to enrich their surroundings by transcending the mundane.

The Gardening Imagination

Garden ornaments help people take an active stance in their lives by enabling them to create a niche in the world that is in concert with their values and their dreams. Indeed, it is this “gardening imagination” that provides people with the opportunity to select meaningful objects that speak to their senses, to their experiences, and to their lives.

An Invitation to Add Garden Decor to your Life

Websites that sell garden decor can be viewed as invitations for people to experiment and let their imaginations run free so that they can, with conscious effort or with playfulness, select the accents that they like–decor that speaks to their dreams and to their soul. With this in mind, look at the different products that are sold and select garden accessories that help elicit childhood fantasies. Examine the different garden accents and choose ornaments that speak to your inner self.

Let Your Personality Shine Through

Garden decor helps calm the spirit, soothe the soul, and delight the senses. By letting your individuality shine through as you select your decorative accents, you will transform your garden into one of the most meaningful experiences in your life. The challenge is to capture moments of wonder, joy, and inspiration and experience the lasting pleasures of beauty and the splendors of nature by decorating your garden in a way that is congruent with your noblest thoughts, feelings, and aspirations.

Garden Fountains

The beautiful sound of running water is soothing to the soul. How many of us would like to sit by a creek and listen to the water moving across the rocks and fallen branches? Many of us could enjoy the sound of a babbling brook for hours. Garden water fountains are the perfect way to bring relaxation and serenity to your favorite outdoor environment.

Garden water fountains are a classy way to spruce up your home or business. They look beautiful and add a unique dimension to any landscape. The sound of falling water can provide privacy for those having intimate conservations. They’re also a wonderful way to tune out the sounds of the city or neighbors pets. Whether you are looking for a way to beautify the asphalt of the city or delight in the sound of trickling water in the garden, there are garden fountains for everyone.

There are many types of fountains to choose from for your garden. Some are free standing with water flowing from top to a pool at the bottom. There are smaller fountains that can be incorporated with plants and other aspects of your garden to create a cohesive look. If your yard space is limited then a fountain attached to your wall will provide the sounds and feelings of flowing water. The power to operate garden water fountains can be from a household outlet, battery or solar. Technological advances have increased the energy of solar fountains, making them an eco-friendly alternative to traditional water fountains

Every know form of life depends on water. The earth’s oceans teem with life forms of astonishing diversity. Anywhere from 55% to 75% of the human body is composed of water, depending on one’s age and gender. It’s only natural that we would find something innately appealing about the presence of water, be it in our bodies or in our backyard.

Watching flowing water is a great benefit of a garden fountain. Garden water fountains will draw the attention of those who visit your home. All ages are drawn to watching flowing water. You will find that once you install outdoor garden fountains your guests will be making their way to your garden’s fountains to appreciate them.

Garden water fountains seem to be one of the key garden decor accents and accessories that many gardeners highlight in their gardens. One of the reasons for this is that the addition of a water fountain can truly add a sense of mystery, serenity, joy and beauty to your life. A water fountain is a source of natural humidity in dry climates, which can benefit thirsty plants and allergy-afflicted people.

Japanese Gardening

Things to keep in mind for a beautiful garden

Main principles on the garden’s design

Bring the Japanese feeling into your garden with these basic steps. First of all, embrace the ideal of nature. That means, keep things in your garden as natural as possible, avoiding to include things that could disrupt this natural appearance.

For example, don’t include square ponds in your design as square ponds are nowhere to be found in nature. Also, a waterfall would be something closer to what exists in nature if we compare it to a fountain. So you also have to consider the Japanese concept of sumi or balance. Because one of Japanese gardening design main purposes is to recreate large landscapes even in the smallest place. Be careful when choosing the elements for your garden, because you don’t want to end up filling your ten by ten courtyard with huge rocks.

As a miniaturized landscape, the rocks in the garden would represent mountains and the ponds would represent lakes. A space filled with sand would represent an ocean. By that we assume that garden masters were looking to achieve a minimalistic approach, best represented by the phrase “less is more”.

The elements of time and space

One of the things westerners notice at first are the many portions of empty space in the garden. In fact, these spaces are an important feature in Japanese gardening. This space called ma, relates to the elements around it and that also surround it. The concepts of in and yo are of vital importance here, they are best known to the Western civilization by the Chinese names yin and yang. If you want to have something you have to start with having nothing. This is an idea quite difficult to understand, but it is a rule of thumb in Japanese gardening.

An important clue in the development of a garden is the concept of wabi and sabi. There’s no literal English translation for those words. Wabi is about uniqueness, or the essence of something; a close literal translation is solitary. Sabi deals with the definition of time or the ideal image of something; the closest definition might be time strenghtened character. Given the case, a cement lantern that might appear unique, would lack of that ideal image. Or an old rock covered in lichens would have no wabi if it’s just a round boulder. That’s why it is important to find that balance.

Ma and wabi/sabi are connected to the concepts of space and time. When it comes to seasons, the garden must show the special character of each one. Japanese garden lovers dedicate time to their gardens every season, unlike the western gardener who deserts in fall just to be seen again in spring.

Gardening Styles

Each gardener has his or her own set of gardening guidelines that correspond to certain predetermined gardening styles. If you know your gardening style and if you can apply that style to creating an organic garden, then you have pretty much captured an edge over other gardening enthusiasts. But, if you do not have a gardening style that you can apply to organic vegetable growing, then you could be at a strong disadvantage. What are the different styles of gardening that actually apply to successful organic vegetable harvesting? Here are some of the types that you could consider:

Residential Gardening

This is the most common of all gardening techniques. It is often referred to as “backyard gardening”. If you are just a novice and not seasonally experienced in vegetable gardening, then residential gardening is your best approach. The primary purpose of the residential garden is to feed a family. A steady supply of home grown vegetables can not only feed your family now, if you understand canning and preserving, your garden can nourish your family long after the production period of your garden has ended.

The second appeal of residential gardening lies in its aesthetic appeal. Your garden can add color and depth to your landscape. It is quite transforming to see what was once only grass, a wooden deck, or a concrete balcony develop into an eye pleasing sculpture.

Residential gardening does not require a great deal of space. A window sill, deck, balcony or other small area that has sufficient light can easily produce a small crop. These small confined areas are easy to monitor and at the same time, easy to maintain. Protecting your garden from pests is much easier in a smaller area. The great thing about residential gardening is the ease with which it transforms the gardening wannabe into the gardening professional. It takes the rookie, having no knowledge of planting, growing, and harvesting, to a level of understanding where other gardening styles become the dream and the possibility.

Specialized Gardening

Specialized gardening usually involves non-residential areas. Common examples of specialized gardening include amusement parks, botanical gardens, zoos, commercial landscaping along highway right of ways, and many more. Making the landscape more attractive seems to be the most common underlying theme of the specialized garden. These landscaping endeavors are rarely the responsibility of a single person. Often times a staff of botanists and gardeners work together to maintain the garden’s aesthetic attractiveness. These gardens are often created to support or deliver revenue to their owners or the organizations supporting them.

UK Limited Company

When starting a business, a large number of people go down the route of forming a limited company or, to give it its full title, a limited liability company.

The alternative for someone starting up in business on their own is to trade as a sole-trader. There is less formal paperwork involved in going into business as a sole-trader, but a limited company can offer a number of advantages. These include greater opportunities to reduce the amount of tax your business pays, and increased protection of your personal assets in the event of the business running into problems.

This article explains how a limited company is structured, and details the steps you need to take to form your own limited company.

The first thing you will need to do is to decide on a name for your new limited company. Companies House maintains a list of all companies registered in the UK, and you can use their website to check if the name you want is available or whether it is already in use by another company.

Whatever name you opt for will have to have the word “limited” (often abbreviated to Ltd) at the end. So if, for example, your wanted to call your new business “The Ultimate Widget Company” then the full name of your limited company would be The Ultimate Widget Company Limited or The Ultimate Widget Company Ltd.

Your new company will need at least two people to act as officers of the company. One of these people will be the company secretary. The other person will be a director of the company. If you wish, the company secretary can be a director as well, but he/she cannot be the sole director.

The company secretary has certain legal responsibilities such as ensuring that the company submits annual returns to Companies House and that the company and its directors operate within the law.

Farm Town Vs Farmville

There are 117 groups on Facebook dedicated to FarmVille, and another 106 groups dedicated to Farm Town. In these groups you can find groups of players that hate FarmVille, and a group of players that hate people who hate FarmVille (titled “Anti-FarmVille Groups Suck”). And of course there are groups dedicated to bashing both games and the people who play them.

As an objective player (I think) of both games, I am setting out to solve the age old question (tongue in cheek): Which is better? Farm Town or FarmVille?

Land Expansions:

Farm Town: When you reach Level 15 you can expand your farm using coins; at Level 25 you can expand to a 24 X 24 Farm. After that you can no longer expand, and there are no immediate plans to add more expansions.

FarmVille: Your level and number of neighbors dictate when you can expand, and expansions are few and far between. They also cost more. The 24 X 24 expansion is still locked for all players.

Decorations, Buildings, and Landscaping:

Farm Town: There are a lot of options for decorating your farm. You can create 3-D effects and elevation by using the decorations available. Simply, there is a lot more than you do with your farm on Farm Town. However, will all of those options, it is easy to run out of land very quickly.

FarmVille: There are options for decorating your farm, but many of them are purchased with FarmVille Cash (purchased with your very real money). In addition, what you see is what you get. You can’t use your creativity to create illusions of elevation, lakes, pools, etc.

Harvesting, Plowing, & Seeding:

Farm Town: You can hire other farmers to do your plowing and harvesting, thus saving a lot of time. Hiring others is also what makes the game very social and interactive. However, when you hire someone to plow for you, you give them a portion of any experience points earned. On the positive side, when you hire someone to harvest for you, you get 25% more profit.

FarmVille: You can’t hire others to harvest, plow, or seed for you.

Natural Skin Care Oils

Natural skin care oils can replenish the skin’s moisture content, protect against damage from wind and the elements, soften, soothe and refresh. But, the terms used by cosmetic companies can be confusing. Hopefully, this article will clear up things up.

Many of the lotions and creams on the market contain essential oil. That term was created hundreds of years ago. It was used to describe distilled and concentrated plant fragrances that were said to convey the “essence” of the plant.

They are not oil-based. They are water-based. Lavender oil is one of the common examples. It smells nice, at first. But, when it is heavily concentrated, it causes drowsiness and moodiness. It irritates the throat and nasal membranes. It can cause allergic reactions when applied directly to the skin. Its best use is in aromatherapy, incense, candles or similar items. As a skincare ingredient, it is not the best choice.

Essential fatty acids are entirely different. They are one of the components of human sebum, the skin’s own oils secreted by the sebaceous glands. Many natural skin care oils contain essential fatty acids. Some that are most similar to human sebum, on a molecular level, are listed below, along with the benefits provided by each.

1. Shea butter, pressed from the nut of the Shea tree, beneficial for acne, eczema and psoriasis, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity
2. Avocado oil, pressed from the fleshy pulp surrounding the pit of the avocado, contains numerous nutrients including vitamin A and E, which are known to be beneficial to the skin’s health, shown in clinical trials to increase the amount of collagen in the skin’s layers
3. Grape seed oil, rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants, particularly beneficial for healing the area beneath the eyes
4. Babassu palm oil, helps to balance sebum production, preventing excessive oiliness or dryness

Any of those natural skin care oils can be used by everyone, regardless of their complexion type. It is only mineral oil and other petroleum-based products that cause greasiness and cannot be used by people with acne or a tendency to have pimples.

Petroleum-based oil is not similar to the sebum. It is not absorbed, clogs the pores and causes numerous problems with the skin’s health. If you have an oiler complexion, you’ll be safe if you avoid mineral oil, petrolatum and paraffin. Those are the most common culprits.

As you may have noticed, most natural skin care oils have antioxidant activity. That is important for anyone that wants to delay or reverse the signs of aging.

Rose Plant Gardening

Whether it is roses, other flower gardening, or just about any type of plant, the secret to successful organic gardening of any kind is to understand the way nature works. Nature always tries to maintain a delicate balance. By understanding the basics of how plants grow, you will understand how to maintain nature’s balance and thus keep your roses healthy.
Basically, water and nutrients are absorbed into the root system and pulled up through the stems into the green leaves by the process of photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is a plant process that uses water and energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide into carbohydrates that it uses for growth and other plant functions.
The carbohydrates are stored in the branches and stems of roses, trees, and other plants. These stored carbohydrates are used as reserve energy for the plant. When a crises occurs, such as a broken stem or pathogenic attack, the stored carbohydrates are used. Stored carbohydrates are also used in the spring to create new stems and foliage.
A natural soil environment teems with bacteria, fungi, nematodes, earthworms, and other soil organisms. Many of these soil organisms break down dead leaves and other materials into humus, which enriches the soil. Other soil organisms form symbiotic relationships with roses and other plants.

A symbiotic relationship is a relationship that is beneficial to all participants in the relationship. Mycorrhizal fungus creates an important symbiotic relation with roses and other plants. Mycorrhiza attaches itself to the roots of your roses and other plants. It uses some of the carbohydrates stored by your plants to grow, but helps your roses and other plants by making minerals more available. In a healthy soil environment, the mycorrhizae attached to one of your roses will grow and become interconnected to the mycorrhizae of other roses and plants. In effect, it provides a secondary root system for your garden plants.
Roses and other plants also release exudates from their roots that attract beneficial organisms. As an example, exudates from rose roots attract friendly bacterium that ward off pathogenic fungi.
Beneficial soil organisms, which are found in natural humus and compost, also make minerals more available to your roses and other plants. Beneficial soil organisms also help protect roses and other plants from predatory life forms.

Another important thing to understand is that plants of all kinds are a little bit like humans–some get along very well and some don’t. Some plants grow well together and actually help each other survive. Other plants inhibit neighboring plants. Plants that grow well together are referred to as companion plants. Companion plants are an important factor in any garden. We will talk more about them later.

Organic growers recognize that pathogenic attacks are an indication that the plant or plants are out of balance. Organic growers know that pathogens can’t get a foothold on a healthy plant.
Commonly used chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides destroy soil organisms and throw roses, flowers, and other plants out of balance. The imbalance created by these chemicals attracts pathogens.

Finally, fruit is the most natural food. When you see a piece of fruit dangling from the branch of a tree it is telling you something: “Eat my fruits and help me spread my seeds.” That is how nature works, humans eat fruits and vegetables and subsequently help plants spread.

Human beings use animals to work the land to grow the plants and trees that produce these vegetables and fruits. No wonder, fruit is the best human diet
